These are optional places to show your interest. Perhaps friends will see that you're going and join the event.

Date and Time

KinkForAll Washington DC will be held on November 21st at 10:30 AM (to help us setup, arrive at 10 AM) until 6 PM.

Location and Directions

We'll be at the Montgomery County Executive Office Building, located at 101 Monroe Street, Rockville, MD 20850. We'll start in the cafeteria and signs will help point you in the right direction, just in case. This is made possible by Montgomery County's Community Use of Public Facilities program. This activity is not sponsored by, associated with, or endorsed by Montgomery County Public Schools or Montgomery County Government.

The Executive Office Building is located about a short walk from the Rockville Metrorail station (near the end of the Red line), which is located at 251 Hungerford Drive, Rockville, MD 20850. Here's a Google Map of the short, 5-minute walk. Step by step directions are as follows:

  1. Take the Red Line Metro to the Rockville station.
  2. After exiting the station, take the pedestrian bridge across the road and continue until you reach Monroe Street.
  3. Turn left at Monroe Street (before the cinema). The Executive Office Building will be located on your right.

Free parking is available at the County Council Garage across the street from the Executive Office Building, at the intersection of West Jefferson St and Monroe St. There's also a pay-lot at 51 Monroe Street called Colonial Parking, a 2 minute walk away from our venue.

Needs list

Support equipment is still in the process of being organized. Currently, we have need (or want) of the items on the following list. If you are participating and/or are able and willing to lend us a hand, we'd very much appreciate it. Offer your help by sending email to the mailing list so that we can coordinate getting things done together. If you are already planning to bring things please list them on the KinkForAllWashingtonDCInventory page.

  • Camcorders/handycams/video and audio recording equipment. (Bring your still cameras, too!)
  • Digital projectors (and maybe projector screens?)
  • Room dividers?
  • Wireless Internet access equipment (to provide free Wi-Fi at the event)
    • 3G/WiMax cards and/or Symbian OS phones running JoikuSpot (mobile hotspot software)
    • Wireless WAN routers, etc.
  • Butcher paper or other large paper on which to create a schedule grid.
  • Whiteboards/flip-boards or other presentation accessory materials of the sort.
  • Food and drinks
  • Disposable utensils and plates on which to eat. ;)

This event would not be possible without contributions from participants like you. There are a number of ways you can contribute—only one of them is financial. If you can make or bring any of the things on the needs list, please do so! If you can't but still want to help out, then please consider offering a monetary donation in the amount of your choosing by clicking the "Donate" button, below. Even as little as $5 goes a very long way towards helping us hold a better event.

Your donation is being routed directly to an unorganizer of this event and will be used for the event itself, its promotion, or the promotion of KinkForAll only. To see where your money is being spent, view or subscribe to the KinkForAll Washington DC financials spreadsheet.

Individual donors choose to contribute their time, money, efforts and/or assistance as a means of expressing their support for the ideals and goals of KinkForAll. To view a current list of individual financial donations so far, see the KinkForAll Washington DC Financials spreadsheet.

I'm thrilled to see that many people are signing up to help unorganize this first KinkForAll Washington DC! At the same time, I'm a little concerned that with all the new "unorganizer" signups there is a conspicuous lack of (public) discussion about getting things together to actually make it happen. Please remember that if you've got the time and energy to put into unorganizing this, you need to join the mailing list at http://groups.google.com/group/kinkforall and discuss what you're doing with the rest of the unorganizers so we can better coordinate together. Looking forward to getting things rolling with you all!

Just a note to let everyone know that I had a FANTASTIC time talking with a bunch of you folks who both signed up for KinkForAll Washington DC on this page and also came to the Sex 2.0 conference. We had a great discussion in which we nailed down a few things about finances and location and time. I'm now operating under the assumption that our venue will be American University and our date will be June 21st. I'll update this page the moment I can confirm this with the venue itself, which should hopefully be this Monday. :)

Hey Maymay - heard you at the Sin20 conference- excited to attend the Kinkforall!

I've got a concern about the open call for recording devices. As a professional educator and photographer, I feel it is critical to provide a written release with an opt out for all participants and presenters. I am happy to draft this, but will not allow anyone to record me (audio, video or still) without a signature on a usage agreement.

maymay said

@Professor Oni: You are welcome to request that participants to your presentations do not record you. You are not required to be recorded if you choose to give a presentation. It is your responsibility to make sure that you participate in a way that is acceptable to you. Most KinkForAll presenters are not professional educators, so requiring them to use a usage agreement is onerous and unnecessary.

That's fine, but I was also thinking of the rights of participants to opt out of being captured in recordings taken off-angle of the presenter.

Professor Oni,

Participants are given an option to wear an orange-colored name tag that signals their desire to be excluded from recording. See also http://wiki.kinkforall.org/TheRulesOfKinkForAll

Of course, KinkForAll is a public-space event, and cameras and recording devices are allowed. Just like in any other public space, no guarantees one way or the other are made. To date, this has never been a problem.

What is the policy for dealing with a participant who does not comply with the orange sticker rule?

Professor Oni said

at 4:27 pm on Nov 12, 2009

In a nutshell, if K4A cannot ensure that my desire not to be recorded or photographed will be respected (instead of "should be") then I will have to withdraw my offer to participate and present.

maymay said

Professor Oni,

There is no such policy. We expect that people will treat each other with courtesy and respect and rely on individuals to exemplify personal responsibility to make the event run. If they do not, fellow participants will collectively deal with the situation reasonably.

If you don't trust fellow participants to treat you with such respect, then not coming to an unconference makes sense. However, I think you'll find that in an unconference space like this one, people are eager to be respectful of each other.

Sounds good on paper maymay, but unfortunately, I'm not in a position to gamble. I'll have to withdraw, but I wish you good luck with the event.
